As the days grow longer and the day-dreams of reising trout increase, I find myself gazing ou the window only to find winter is still in full swing. Moving into the latter part of January and the first of February you will find an increase in afternoon temperatures promoting my favorite little guy to emerge. Yes folks it is that time of year, the BWO’s will be dancing in a few weeks with intermittent sporadic hatches of snow flies (midges).
With that being said we will be having our annual banquet, and folks we need all the help we can get. I know it has been a hard year for local businesses, heck it has been a hard year for all of us. With the economy on the up swing, let’s get out there and pound the pavement for donations.
Our guest speaker comes to us from Colorado and is Trout Unlimited’s Host of On The Rise, Frank Smethhurst. Frank will be talking on the importance of leaving each and everyone of your legacy for the generations to come, and his different travels to clubs like ours around the nation that are making a difference not only in their fisheries but the guture of our great past time.
We are going to role the dice this year and change things up a little. As you will see, we are going to spice things up in the newsletter and club meetings. First we are going to highlight local tiers in the club and give them a 30 minute demo at each meeting. We are going to highlight local tiers in the club and give them a 30 minute demo at each meeting. We are going to update fishing reports for our local hot spots and hopefully do some philanthropy work for the less fortunate kids not only in our community but those surrounding our community. We are also going to do a tips and tactics section in the newsletter and update rountinely on the website.
With all this being said, I am going to ask for Volunteers to help with a Carp Fly Fishing Tournament. Proceeds will be donated to the Camp Rainbow Gold Cancer Camp for Children. We also will have club members the last week in August donate their time to help teach these terminally ill children the Joy of Fly Fishing hopefully bringing the same smile to their face as it does ours every time we yell fish on. This can be as big as a “B run Steely” so please help me hlep these kids with their battle against cancer.
Last but not least for you steelhead gurus don’t miss this January meeting. Les Reitz will be tying his famous Lazer Butt Skunk Fly. Come learn from our very own 2 hand fanatic how he does it each and every year. I think his motto is “Swing It”!!!
Stay tuned for a MVFF Spey Clave!!!

As we start a new year of leadership with Magic Valley Fly Fisher’s I am excited to work with each and everyone on opportunities that will promote our great passion. With this passion comes responsibility to educate, promote, and conserve. It is time we give back to our natural resource and provide opportunities for our kids, grandkids, and great grandchildren. With that in mind, be thinking of some stream restoration projects we can work on in the next year oryears to come. Conservation is the key to preserve this sport we all love!
With another fishing season come and gone we move into winter to finds more time to sit down, tie some replacements and reminisce about eh big one that got away. This time of year is confusing as the fall/winter season kicks off the many bird hunting/fishing opportunities that exist. One is torn between long hikes to replace that precious fly tying material, or the surreal backdrop of heads bobbing out of the water picking off emerging insects as if were buy one get one free at the Golden Corral. Personally I have found myself trying to replace a few feathers as of lately. However, don’t let the shorter days discourage you on the water, with colder water temperatures and a prolific Baetis hatch one can find fish rising on all our area waters.
As we move closer to the holiday season our Christmas party is just around the corner. This year we will be holding it on December 11th at Anderson Camp. In tradition fashion I cannot wait to eat fried turkey, that enornouse ham, and all those great dishes provided by the wonderful club members. Remember tro bring your own adult beverages.
This yer our featured speaker will be Todd Lanning from Eastern Idaho. Todd spent several years in the Ketchum area guiding for Headwters. He now is in charge of the day to day operations at South Fork Outfitters in Swan Valley, Idaho. Todd has many years of tail water and spring creek experience; his presentations are always crowd pleasers. So get geared up, bring that special dish and I hope to see all of you there. Don’t foreget your checkbooks for the raffle!
Remember fly tiers bring in your favorite creations so we have plenty of flies for this years’s hat bank. You can contact me or Chad Chorney!
